NASCAR Gets Stood Up

Most of the team owners in the NASCAR Cup Series did not attend a scheduled owners' council meeting with NASCAR officials. Reports suggest that the absence was related to ongoing negotiations between NASCAR and Cup teams over the renewal of charter agreements. The current charters, which guarantee a team a spot in the field in each Cup series race and a portion of the purse, and NASCAR's current TV deal both expire at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Although the team owners may have technically violated the current charter agreement by skipping the meeting, there appears to be no penalty involved. NASCAR is committed to continuing discussions with all industry stakeholders.

β€œThe issue right now is the teams, from an economic perspective, are struggling. Our financial model doesn’t work but the sport is still thriving.”

Kaulig Appeal Upheld

An appeals panel has upheld most of the penalties NASCAR imposed on Kaulig Racing's No. 31 team and driver Justin Haley, including a $100,000 fine and four-race suspension for crew chief Trent Owens and the loss of 10 playoff points. The penalties were for the unapproved modification of a single-source supplied part, hood louvers, which are used as a release point for ducts transferring air out of each car's radiator. The panel did reduce the owner and driver penalties from 100 points each to 75. Kaulig Racing has the option of making a final appeal to the Final Appeals Officer.

Massa's 15 Year Old Grudge

Former Formula 1 driver, Felipe Massa, is reportedly exploring legal options to contest the outcome of the 2008 Formula 1 world championship that he lost to Lewis Hamilton. Massa is prompted to take action after former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone's recent comments about the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

In an interview with F1-Insider, Ecclestone revealed that he and then FIA president Max Mosley knew of the situation "during the 2008 season" and had enough information in time to investigate the matter. Ecclestone suggested that they should have canceled the race in Singapore under these conditions which would have had an impact on the championship standings.

"This is very sad, to know the result of this race was supposed to be canceled, and I would have a title. In the end, I was the one who lost the most with this result. So, we are going after it to understand all this."

Sainz's Severe Penalty

Ferrari's team principal, Frederic Vasseur, criticized the penalty given to Carlos Sainz in the Australian Grand Prix, which pushed him out of the points. Sainz collided with Fernando Alonso on the final restart, causing him to spin out and lose his third-place position. Despite the finishing order being taken from the grid order before the incident, Sainz was given a five-second time penalty during a red flag period.

Vasseur thinks the penalty was too harsh and should have been discussed after the race. He believes incidents like this should be reviewed in a different way, and stewards should take the time to discuss them.
