Mercedes clears the air on what F1 should focus on to improve racing
Good morning! Kyle Busch is the King of Soundbites (which is why we keep trying to get him on the podcast!) and yesterday he lived up to that name when he appeared as a guest on the Pat McAfee Show. Here’s a clip of him breaking down some of the subtle differences between F1 and NASCAR…

The Wrong Direction
🏎️ Mercedes' Technical Director, James Allison, claims F1 went the wrong direction with the most recent regulation changes. He voices concerns over the sport's focus on minimizing 'dirty air'. This obsession, according to Allison, sidestepped crucial aspects like tire behavior, impacting the quality of racing.
🔄 Red Bull's continued dominance isn't seen as a regulatory failure but a challenge for others to meet. "I don't necessarily think that they've failed," Allison admits, suggesting instead that "there are things in the regulations that don't serve any of us well."
🚧 With an eye on the future, the 2026 regulation changes are the main focus. Allison advocates for lessons from the past, particularly around the problematic power dynamics of floor and diffuser designs. He calls for a more balanced approach, moving away from an overemphasis on wake management.
💡 "But the particular layout of these ones, that have a response to rear ride height that is not particularly good for the cars, that isn't something that we should carry into 2026," he urges, pushing for innovation that benefits all teams and fans alike.
