Is Ross Chastain the villain NASCAR needs?

Good morning! It's NASCAR throwback weekend! Although a lot of the throwback schemes are less than exciting this year (looking at you RCR 👀), we still have an exciting newsletter waiting for you! The second episode of the Money Lap podcast drops, Red Bull's internal rivalry continues and NASCAR lets the boys have at it.

The Money Lap Podcast

Tyler Reddick - Tyler already has a win under his belt this year and has six top-10 finishes in the past nine races. He finished second and third at Darlington in 2022. Look for Reddick to excel again this weekend.

Trending Down 📉

Austin Dillon - Despite a 10th place effort at Kansas, Austin only has three top-10 finishes in the past 12 races. He has an average finish of 18.5 at Darlington and shouldn't be considered in your lineup on Sunday.

Red Bull's Race for the Championship

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has denied claims that Sergio Perez received less information from the team than his teammate Max Verstappen during the Miami Grand Prix. Despite Verstappen's victory, Horner believes Perez's own championship aspirations have not been overly damaged, stating that there is still a long way to go in the season and plenty of opportunities for points to be won or lost.

“It’s the swings and roundabouts of sport. A week ago, he would have been on a high. I don’t think he’ll be too disappointed, he’s still taken away 18 points from here. I don’t think there’s anybody that would have beaten Max.”

 Is Miami here to Stay?

The Miami Grand Prix has been praised for its ability to prioritize being the best event it can be by listening to feedback and improving after it's inaugural year. Miami organizers' premium on the fan experience comes at the expense of ticket prices, which means many fans are unable to afford them.

Despite some criticism before the event, the Miami GP was deemed successful. While tickets sold out later than in the previous year, this was because not all tickets were released at the same time. The newly constructed Paddock Club accommodated roughly 6,000 people per day, and the quality of food and service has improved since the first race. The appearance of empty grandstands is believed to be because fans were enjoying other amenities that the grand prix offers.

Tom Garfinkel, the CEO of the Miami Dolphins, believes that Miami's race can lead to career opportunities within F1 for locals. He stated that the impact that this event is going to have on people’s lives will be bigger than anything in South Florida for a long time.

Ricciardo Returns

Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian racing driver, is set to drive the Red Bull RB19 following the British Grand Prix in July. The driver has been supporting Red Bull in a third driver role since parting ways with McLaren at the end of the 2022 season. Ricciardo, who has claimed eight F1 victories to date, said he is excited to get behind the wheel again and reminded the team of the success he once had with them. In addition to his planned outings, Ricciardo is due to tackle the Nordschleife in a Red Bull F1 machine during showrun activities in September.

“I do want to… Right now, I do want to get back on the grid next year. I do feel like there’s certainly some unfinished business. I’m staying like in the loop and staying prepared and whatever."

Boys Have at it

NASCAR has confirmed that there will be no penalties given to Ross Chastain or Noah Gragson for their involvement in a post-race pit road fight at Kansas Speedway. Elton Sawyer, NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, said the sanctioning body looked into the incident but decided against any official sanctions. Sawyer said NASCAR officials are instructed not to get involved with driver confrontations and complimented the officials and both driver’s teams for giving the drivers space. However, NASCAR did make changes to its rulebook prior to the start of the 2023 season to give itself the ability to crack down on egregious driver altercations.

Ticket Sales Trending Up

Penske Entertainment has reported that it is seeing a significant increase in ticket sales for two of its upcoming events. Bud Denker, the President of Penske Corporation, has said that he is happy with the response to the two races at the Hy-Vee IndyCar Weekend doubleheader at Iowa Speedway. Additionally, Denker has stated that the shift from decades of racing at Belle Isle to a new downtown street circuit configuration in the Motor City has been met with unparalleled response from local businesses and event sponsors. The reimagined Detroit Grand Prix is expected to be a big event, with 64 chalets sold out of 70 and ticket sales up almost 105%.
