Aero Blocking and the Role of Spotters, Mirrors, and Cameras in NASCAR

Are spotters necessary in NASCAR?

Aero Blocking and the Role of Spotters, Mirrors, and Cameras in NASCAR

Warren Buffett once said, “The rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” That’s especially true for NASCAR drivers. Mirror driving isn’t a new technique by any means but with the increased aero dependency of the Next Gen, it has since become quite the hot topic. So what would NASCAR look like without mirrors or cameras? Or without spotters? Hell, let’s just take them all out and see what kind of exciting race we end up with!

Obviously, that’s not a realistic option but nonetheless, on a recent episode of The Money Lap, Parker and Landon dove headfirst into a world of NASCAR where there was no looking back.

Aero Blocking: A Defensive Maneuver

Aero blocking has become a topic of hot debate in the racing world. As explained by Kligerman, "Denny Hamlin wins, holding off Kyle Larson who had a late charge here at Dover... Denny then did what most of us do, which is see a faster car running a different lane, move up in front of him, taking away that clean air, taking away that opportunity to use that lane." This tactic, while effective, has stirred discussions about its fairness and impact on the sport's competitive nature. There aren’t any rules against it but when an obviously slower car wins, the quality of the racing comes into question.

Mirrors and Cameras: Necessary Tools or Crutches?

Are cameras and mirrors necessary to race? These assets have been integral to the modern style of racing but could be seen as crutches that detract from the on-track product. The debate around their necessity reflects broader questions about the balance between technology and raw driver talent in the sport's future. You can’t blame a driver for utilizing all of the tools given to him but fans would rather see more offensive driving rather than defensive driving.

Kyle Busch's comments on the matter seemed to resonate with other drivers and fans: "The aero blocking is just so bad, so bad. Everyone knows that and uses it as a defense item." He suggests that the extensive use of in-car cameras facilitates aero blocking, proposing that removing these cameras could potentially mitigate the issue.

The Role of NASCAR Spotters: Safety vs. Competition

Even if mirrors and cameras were removed, can’t spotters do the same thing? Maybe so, but spotters are essential for safety, guiding drivers about their surroundings on the track, which is crucial in keeping drivers and crew safe. However, Cassill brought an intriguing perspective, questioning whether the sport has become overly dependent on spotters not just for safety but for competitive advantage, potentially to the detriment of pure racing skills.

Cassill explained, "I’ve had this debate with somebody before, and I know that we settled on the most sensible solution to this and that was that we need spotters, and I'm fine with that." Yet, he also pondered, "What would happen? What kind of race would we see?"

If drivers were truly on their own in the cars, would the racing be better? The amount of aero blocking would certainly decrease. But, at what cost?

As motorsports continue to evolve with advancements in technology and strategy, this could be a pivotal moment in racing. The balance between maintaining the sport’s integrity and ensuring its exciting, competitive edge is delicate. As the industry moves forward, the decisions made now could significantly shape the future of racing, making every race not just a competition of speed but also a showcase of strategy and skill.

What do you think? Are cameras, mirrors, and spotters hindering the racing quality? Which one would you take away? Let us know in the comments and if you want more deep dives into topics like this be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and listen to The Money Lap Podcast!
